Racism still exists, America. It's just gotten very subtle.
One of the things White folks need to get through their heads is that African-Americans do listen, do pay attention, and do know all the code words and behaviors.
Why? It's a matter of survival for us. We have lived in a world, a world that existed as recently as 50 years ago, within my Father's lifetime, where an African-American saying the wrong thing, or merely looking at someone the wrong way could get them killed.
Don't believe me? Ask Emmett Till. To esoteric a reference for you, then why don't you try Amadou Diallo or Abner Louima?
Of course, they represent the most extreme form of racism. Today, it's form is far more supple, downright invisible until it strikes.
The election of an African-American President is a historical step forward for us as a society and a nation, it does not mean America has moved past its at times very racist self.
No, we don't have crosses burned on our lawns. We're not called every name but a child of god. That's the past. Now, we just have our authenticity questioned. If you're like me, you have extra eyes following you around the store when you shop, or you see the bag get clutched a little tighter when you're on the elevator. (Or you're told over and over again that the movie that offends you shouldn't offend you).
If you're the President, you're hounded (repeatedly) for your birth certificate. If you're his wife, you're right to complain is cut off.
Consider what Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry says in this piece, and what it says about the view that fundamentally, there's a certain part in the lizard-brain of American that simply will never view me as a "real" American.
What should scare you (Lord knows it scares me) is that I've found these lizard-brain reactions not just in Conservatives, but Liberals as well.

Another positive ad featuring the President?? (VIDEO)
Again, like with Lincoln Chaffee, this isn't a total surprise. This is from Democratic Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias of Illinois.
Hmm. I'm not sure, but I think the President and First Lady use to work in Illinois...somewhere.

All Michelle, All The Time...
Newsweek Magazine is giving Michelle the cover, and a bunch of ink in between.
The first article is: What Michelle Means To Us, as in us Black people.
The next is a piece about raising kids in the White House.
And finally, there's an interview with Michelle.
The first article is: What Michelle Means To Us, as in us Black people.
The new First Lady will have the chance to knock down ugly stereotypes about black women and educate the world about American black culture more generally. But perhaps more important—even apart from what her husband can do—Michelle has the power to change the way African-Americans see ourselves, our lives and our possibilities.
The next is a piece about raising kids in the White House.
The Obamas may enforce a bit of normalcy by making the kids do chores and make their beds—advice that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis gave to Hillary in 1992. But the Obama family will grapple with issues that former first kids haven't had to face. Chelsea Clinton, the last girl of a similar age in the White House, grew up well before the era of Facebook and cell-phone snapshots. Banning Facebook entirely could risk alienating the Obama girls from their peers, but restrictions will almost certainly be necessary for their own protection. Schools that were once valued for their ability to protect famous kids from prying eyes are now wide open if their students choose to post photos or status updates.
And finally, there's an interview with Michelle.
It's just unknown. And like any new thing, it feels a bit daunting until you have your plan. What I do know is that once the pieces start coming together, I think that's when the excitement can begin. When the girls know what school they're going to be in, they'll have a sense of how that's going to feel, and they'll know what their rooms look like. All my anticipation is really around the girls, making sure that they're OK. Barack and I … it's going to be a hard job. He likes hard jobs [laughs]. We know we have a lot of work to do. That's just a natural part of it. But as soon as I know that the kids are where they need to be, the other stuff is just hard work, which we are used to.UPDATE: I should have noted, but the Michelle Interview was conducted on the Campaign Trail, so it's not new.

The Clintons vs. Obamas media obsession continues...
If there was one nice thing about having Sarah Palin to kick around for the last three months, it's that the media has gotten off its previous obsession, which was fomenting anger between the Clinton and Obama camps.
Nice to see that's over with.
Amazing thing about the story...like the Wall Street Journal story from before, it doesn't say anything. Oh, Hillary is glad to mentor Michelle (duh). Oh, Hillary is trying to figure out her role in the Senate after an unexpected loss (unexpected? She lost six months ago.) Oh, and they're ticked about Obama not helping more to retire their campaign debt.
Uhh, a) maybe she shouldn't have run it up when she knew she going to lose, and b) Barack Obama has kinda been busy since August. You might have read about it in the papers.
